SUMMARY:Historian Explores Theater Pioneers
DESCRIPTION:The Doña Ana County Historical Society has scheduled its March speaker series.  Historian Tracie Amend will explore the impact Hershel Zohn and Mark Medoff had on the theater scene of southern New Mexico. The lecture begins at 7:00 p.m.\, Thursday\, March 19 at the Woman’s Improvement Association building at 340 Reymond Street across from Pioneer Women’s Park. \nAmend’s lecture\, “Zohn and Medoff:  Setting the Scene in Southern New Mexico” seeks to trace the two men’s experiences as professors at NMSU and the ways they interacted with the Las Cruces dramatic community.  Amend has taught in four different departments at NMSU\, and she is currently wrapping up an MA in Public History at NMSU.  She hopes to work in museum curation\, education\, and interpretation in the near future.

DESCRIPTION:Residents can sign up to volunteer for the upcoming 37th annual Bataan Memorial March to be held Saturday\, March 21 at White Sands Missile Range. For more info see the event website here. \nThe 26.2-mile Bataan Memorial March commemorates the Bataan Death March\, the brutal forced march of American and Filipino prisoners of war in the early months of America’s involvement in World War II. New Mexico claims a particular connection to the events\, as approximately 1\,800 New Mexicans\, most of them members of the state’s 200th National Guard\, were on the Philippines when it was surrendered. Though heavily supported by WSMR staff and regional military assistance\, the event functions largely on support from volunteers. See volunteer information here.

SUMMARY:Visit the Friends' Cinco de Mayo Booth
DESCRIPTION:Please visit the booth by the Friends of the Taylor Mesilla Historic Site during the Mesilla celebrations of Cinco de Mayo (May 5th).  The annual event will be held on Saturday and Sunday\, May 2-3\, on the Mesilla Plaza. The Friends booth will offer a fun activity for children and adults – making “papel picados” which are perforated tissue papers that are cut into intricate designs and traditionally hung as Mexican-folklore banners.  The activity is free.  In addition\, the Friends’ gift shop — The Barela Store — will also be open during the celebrations.
